The Stirrup Cup is named after a ceremonial cup that would be given to guests when leave to go on a long journey. During the times before cars these journeys would often be on horseback and take a long time. It was a drink to wish good luck upon thee and the name derives from a Stirrup, as in one used to mount a horse and hold the feet of a rider.
