This classic cocktail is perhaps the original. The Old Fashioned cocktail recipe can actually be made with Bourbon, Rye, Gin, or Rum. The version that I’m making today is an Old Fashioned with Bourbon.
History of the Old Fashioned: This cocktail combination is the original cocktail. However when bartenders began to add different ingredients into their cocktails (lemon juice, orgeat, etc). Many purists at the time thought this was ridiculous and make their cocktails what they called the “Old Fashioned” way. This is the most common theory on the origin of the old fashioned.
Notes on Ingredients:
The Bourbon in this should be a solid quality choice. Do not pick something you would not drink neat or on the rocks. This time I decided to use Elijah Craig Small Batch, but the call is all yours.
Angostura is the standard pick for bitters, but adding some other flavor bitters is an easy way to experiment with your cocktails.
In reality this drink is a fantastic base that you can easily tweak in order to make some really tasty cocktails. Everyone should try this drink at least once.
