Although Rum wasn’t always a popular drink here in the United States, the Daiquiri is an awesome cocktail that is beautiful in its simplicity. The drink is believed to have originated in Cuba in the late 1800s. It is named after a beach and iron mine in Cuba. The drink was brought to the U.S. in the early 1900s, but didn’t gain major popularity until World War II when Whiskey and Vodka were rationed. Although many variations have been developed over the years, this is the original.

Drink Appearance

As you can see in the photos the shaking of this drink gives is a cloudy presentation. It is best served with a lime wedge or wheel for the guest. I always prefer to serve this in a chilled cocktail glass, but historically it can also be served over cracked ice.

Drink Ingredients

  • 2 oz Light Rum
  • 1 oz Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice
  • 1/2 oz 2:1 Simple Syrup

Drink Preperation

  1. Add all ingredients into a mixing glass
  2. Add ice and shake well
  3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass
  4. Garnish with a lime wedge or wheel

Drink Impressions

Overall I find this drink to be very powerful with citrus. It is one that cuts down on the alcohol burn greatly and can taste decent with a variety of different rums. You can up the simple syrup a little if you find it to be too overpowering on the sour side. A 2:1:1 ratio would work nicely with this drink I think.

Also don’t be afraid to try some Dark Rum in this drink as well. It can add an extra dimension to this drink as well.
